Default perturbed and confused

alright everybody, so i found out the hard way that my 4x4 does not work on my 1995 chevy blazer ls(getting stuck in a tiny ditch in the middle of the forest). i dont believe its the transfer case as i can hear it engage into both 4hi and 4lo, but the front wheels remain dormant. so i decided to start simple and work my way up. i replaced the vacuum actuator and the cable and it still doesnt seem to engage. the auto parts store also gave me this part

its come to my attention that this is a solenoid but it is for 1996 trucks and up. im at a loss here and im hope i can find solace here. HELP! what is this part, do i need it, and if not what part do i need/what should i do!?

THANK YOU!

What newguy said. The 4x4 vac controller switch is on the transfer case, above the front drive shaft, and points straight up. It's a pain to get to unless you have a body lift. It can be done, but it helps to have skinny hands. It will have 3 vacuum lines coming down to it. the 3 lines will all lift off together with a little plastic plug.

If the t-case works, why not just go to a cable engagement of the front differential? You can buy "posi-lock" kits, but you can make the same thing yourself for less money. There's several threads on here about it.

I did it on mine, and it worked great!
