Wheel bearing noise that is not coming from wheel bearings
Hey everyone. I am getting front end vibration and noise starting at around 20 mph and increasing with speed (not engine power) until the wind noise cancels out the front end noise. Here is what I know what it could and cannot be:
-Wheel bearings are only 1 year/12k old.
-Truck was test driven yesterday by a 4x4 shop (I had them look at a possible front axle leak. It was power steering fluid leaking from above the axle. The differential is full and not leaking.) and they reported "wheel bearing noise" that doesn't respond as bad wheel bearings do when they change pitch during turns. This was before I told them I have new bearings and they rotated the tires.
-CV Axles are between 2 and 2.5 years old and not leaking or making noise.
-Rotating the front tires with each one off the ground leads to a very faint noise with little resistance and wiggling it up and down leads to no play whatsoever that I can detect. Left and right there is play, but it isn't in the bearing, tie rods or idler arm. I already know I have a worn steering box and I think it is that.
-Tires are 9.5 months old and the one now mounted to the front left is missing a .25 weight. They were rotated yesterday.
-Front differential has a Posi-Lok and the noise is the same whether it is locked or unlocked.
Is it possible that the missing weight is causing an out of balance wheel to make the front end vibrate and make noise?
