Default 4x4 not engaging!!

Hey there,

I just purchased a 87 4X4 s10 blazer... i took it out for the first time yesterday to test out the 4x4... when I put it in to "N" and engage the 4x4 low gear, it grinds and wont let me go in to low 4x4. I have to acually turn the truck off in "N" and then shift it into gear. when its in gear it feels and sounds like the 4x4 is working but when i try and climb anything the front tires arent spinning? does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Thanks

You have to have the transmission in neutral and the vehicle either stopped or slightly rolling. If this does not work, then your transmission may not be fully engaging neutral. Can you engage 4LO when in park?

when you do get in 4lo does the indicator light for the front driveshaft and front axel light up if not then u need to check your four wheel drive actuator which is vacuum diaphragm that is on the passenger side of the engine compartment either below the battery or on the fender. What it is supposed to is when u shift to either 4hi or 4lo it is supposed to collapse the diapragm thus pulling the cable to engage the front differential. The few things that can fail are the cable breaking or clip popping off that holds the cable to the diff(happen to my 84 s15 jimmy) or a hole in the diaphragm or bad vacuum lines let me know if the diapragm is collapsing.
