Hi, i have an 85 2.8l 4x4 which i didn't drive often but now i am going to driving it for a bit. I put the thermo choke on it last year and i don't think it has ever been set correctly. I have a chiltons but following that gives me poor results ( if i an doing it right?). I turned it a bit the other day and i think i found the sweet spot, could accelerate without hesitation and milage seemed to be better. I have played with over the last year (like i say i didn't drive it much) and it almost always studdered under moderate throttle, i was thinking it was the carb?? Anyway after i had it running well (sweet spot) i had to take it off today to put the bottom screw in and i forgot to mark it... Put it back on and i can smell fuel and it studders really bad once again. Can someone please explain how to set it correctly? I would really appreciate it. The motor had all the emissions stuff on it so i guess it was a Cali. hank you very much..

 

The 85 2.8L carb is one of the worst imaginable. They are called feedback carburetors and are garbage. Even when they run right, they still suck.

You have the Rochester E2SE carb (if it is original). Searching on Google and here for "Rochester+E2SE" should turn up some pretty good results.

one other thing? can some one tell me how exactly this thing works?Does the wire that plugs into it heat it so it expands forcing the choke to close?? Thats all i can think of? Thanks

 

I have it set where it should be, the only problem is it will not come off the "fast" idle,the fast idle cam or whatever it is doesn't rotat out of the way of the throttle, what causes that?? if i back the thermo back some it will. Is that what i do? Thank you.

 

Most of the problems with a carb not coming down from fast idle are caused by gummed up or bent linkages on the side of the carb.
