'86 S-10 Blazer Cuts out when accelerating
My 86 S10 Blazer starts fine and idles well. When in park or neutral if I give it gas it works great. In drive if I give it more than half the peddle the check engine light comes on and it dies for a second then keeps going then dies then goes. I really don't know much about engine work but want a basic idea of what is going on before I take it in somewhere and get charged for a bunch of work I don't need.

Check the codes. For more information on how to check codes, read up on Troublecodes.net. Once you have the codes, let us know and we'll go from there.

Might be a dirty fuel filter

Check engine light was coming on not because of any code but because the engine was dying with the key in the ignition. It only happened while moving so I started thinking maybe it was a ground short. It ended up being something very simple! The positive cable leaving the battery goes to the starter. The bolt had come loose and the connection was breaking from the vibration while driving. Tighten it down and everything is perfect now.

If this is a carburated engine a couple things come to mind. Float level is not correct, Acceleratior Pump not functioning correctly and a stuck or malfunctioning fuel inlet valve. If you buy a carb kit you will get all of these parts. You can replace the accelerator pump and inlet valve without removing the carburator I believe. The float level you might be able to do it on the car. The carb kit has instructions and parts breakdown. It is not hard at all. Bogging down during acceleration is sign of the accelerator pump going bad. (Like a small tire pump that provides extra fuel)
