Default 91 Blazer Fuel Guage problem

Heys guys was browsing the web, and what better place to get an answer then the Blazer forum. I just bought a 1991 Blazer 4x4 2-door, and since I've owned it I haven't ran out of gas (luckily). It just seems to be off I notice everytime I kill it the gas gauge stay somewhere close to a half-tank, but fluctuates between half-full when driving It's never seemed to go below a half a tank. I was wondering could this be a problem? How hard is it to take off the gas tank and check my float? I'm just lost here as the guy said when i bought it the gas gauge didn't work properly and I don't want to be stranded on the road.

the gas tank isnt all that hard to take down. theres a dust shield that has like 8-10 bolts or so holding it up. then 4 bolts for the straps. put a jack and a board under the tank. take the straps down. lower the jack a bit just enough that you can go through the driver side rear wheel well. take tire off if you want better access. take the fuel lines loose from the sending unit. use two wrenches to take them off or you will bust the line. then there is a grounding strap 10mm i think on top of the frame by the rear bumper middle. i would just buy a whole new sending unit with pump and be done with it. there pretty darn cheap on ebay. you can change just the gauge part of it though. and if you dont get a new sending unit at least put a new sock filter on the pump and a new rubber hose going from the pump to the metal line.
