'92 4.3 4wd gas mileage and high idle

Yup, no more leaking fuel. I put a new fuel filter on it also, couldn't believe the amount of black crap that poured out of the old one.
I used the AC Delco off vehicle throttle body service kit, which came with all of the gaskets, o rings, etc plus a few others since it's meant to cover a few different model TBI units.
I noticed the thermostat housing gasket is leaking a little, must have missed a piece of old gasket when I changed the thermostat.

I managed to change out one control arm bushing before deciding that I needed heavier artillery

Well come, Glad you found some of the problems, on the passengers side of the throttle body is the 'Idle Control Valve' they often get dirty or out of calibration. The tip Of the pindle needs to be 1" from the gasket seat. Once installed, drive the Vehicle for 20 minutes at around 40 MPH till the PCM gets to do the final adjusting. Did you check for any trouble codes set in the PCM ?
