egr valve clean

what exactly are the symptoms of a 'dirty' egr valve? i 'cleaned mine out today' with throttle body cleaner. i've heard mention of soaking them over night. is the screen on the gasket overly beneficial?

any feedback would be sweet.

ps: it was removed with 10mm socket. used extension on driver side bolt. only have to detach air hose and corresponding wires.

Symptoms - code 32 or 34 (cant remember which) in the engine light... Stalling out at lights and easily restarting... surging at operating temperature.

A stuck open egr is basically a huge vacuum leak. Horrible idle, poor acceleration, but drive-able at speed. The screened gasket is a must!!!! Chunks of carbon from the intake is what sticks in them and holds the little plunger open. If you go back with a regular gasket, you will more than likely have the same problem again very soon.

If an EGR valve was stuck open would it make a loud annoying noise?

I'm not sure you would be able to hear it, but it would be very noticeable from the way the engine would be running, in my experience.
