Default Oil Gauge is bobbing and drops to 0% in idle

Ok I dont know whats going on now lol

Yesterday my brother and I popped off the carb and replaced the gasket. Boy was it a mess, there was a 2 inch gap where air was getting in. Started the truck and it ran fine. Beautifully in fact.

I left the truck over night and drove it this morning into town. Everything seemed normal until I slowed to an idle and then the oil gauge needle started bobbing up and down. Then dropped to 0%. But onceI start up again and get rolling, it goes up to about 20% and stays there fine.

The oil is topped off nicely, right in the zone its suppoest to be on the stick. There are no leaks that I can see and the truck leaves no oil spots on the ground.

Is my gauge going out or something more serious?

My truck is a chevy s10 1989 4x4 4.6 litre

I wouldnt trust a factory gauge any day. If you didnt take out the distributor then it should all be the same...given the oil pump is good and the shaft isnt broken/stripped. I would hook up a mechanical gauge and check it. If it tests out good it could be the oil sending unit sensor on the rear of the manifold. Or it could be your gauge as well but I think thats rare. I could be wrong bout the gauge though. Try it the other way first.

^^ +1

Put a mechanical gauge on it and see where it lies. Should be at a bare minimum 8psi at idle.

You can get a mechanical gauge at pretty much any autoparts store. You will then have to adapt it to the 1/4" NPT hole in the block. If you get the appropriate t-fitting, you can put a mechanical gauge in with the factory oil pressure sending unit and leave it as is.

Both of my trucks do the same thing, it gives me reason to get under the hood and check fluids more often.
