Sputtering, please help!

So I had a friend mechanic finally take a look at it. He seems to think it is a vacuum issue. We reconnected a few hoses, changed a few dry rotted others. Checked fuel pump again, seems to be down around 50 now. He found a major leak around the front, beneath the TB, upper manifold gasket. I'm talking an approximate 2" long gap in this gasket. So he says I need to start there, do the UMG, and there's something else in there that since I'll have that open, to replace also.
One good thing is since he reconnected the hoses, that dreadfully high idle seems to have disappeared. Prayerfully we're finally on the right track. I'm literally crippled as I'm not home.

So a little update. Still stuck in Jersey, just got the truck back again yesterday . So far I've done the spider assembly, fuel pump, filter, UMG, vacuum hoses, and a few other odds and ends. The truck starts now without spraying it, but I think that sputtering is still there. I haven't taken it anywhere for a decent test drive, I need to get some oil.
When all is said and done, it will probably be something simple, like changing the spark plugs.
At this point, I just want to be able to drive.
