91 Speedometer / Odometer not working

First I'd like to say hello, my name is Doug and I found this forum after searching google for some answers. I picked up a 91 S10 Blazer 2Dr 4.3L from a buddy a few days ago for $500, seems like a pretty good deal, drives well and is in fairly good shape. It's got a couple small issues, one of which I'm asking about here.

So the speedometer and odometer both are not working on the dash. These are the standard mechanical gauges, not the digital ones. I have checked the fuses under the dash, all of them are fine. This morning I replaced the VSS on the transfer case with a new one however the speedo/odot are still not working. I've tried it in 2H, 4H, and 4L to see if it would make a difference, and it didn't.

Hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I did a search on the forum and read several threads, most all of which said change the vss.

According to my buddy, the gauges started to intermittently fail before giving out altogether

Thanks

Id say its the cluster. Years ago i had a 91 with the same issue, changed out everything i could think of, and it ended up being the cluster. Its not hard to remove them just about 400000 screws lol.

Yeah cluster was going to be the next thing I replaced, just wanted to check if there might be something else before I start buying more parts.

I also read something that mentioned the speedo/odot might not work if there isn't a deck installed (perhaps cause of open wires) As I don't have a deck in the rig at the moment, is there any validity to this?

No. It should work anyway. Someone might have cut a wire though when they pulled the deck out.
