check engien light
 

hello on my way home from work tonight my
check engien light started to flicker, mainly
when i acellareted harder. and when the light
flashed the thermosat jumped up then back
to reg temp, any ideas
my truck is a 1991 jimmy s15
4.3 2 wheel drive with 237000km

So what code(s) did it throw?

Well honestly ya can guess at parts and solutions all day long. Ya can replace every part on the truck but one and that be it. Pull the codes and we can go from there using our heads instead of luck.

sorry i didnt have time lastnight due too getting home from work at 11.30pm and i didnt have time today cause it took longer to take the trailer hitch ball off so i can tow a trailer once, ill try tomarrow. i was told buy a buddy that it could be the temp senser that goes in the block?

You have 2 temp sensors. One for the gauge and one for the ecm. The one for the gauge goes bad the gauge will act up but won't throw a SES light. The one for the ecm goes bad it will run like crap and throw a SES. Stuff like that is why I'm not gonna guess.

Cant help ya till you grab a paperclip and spend 2 mins getting the codes. Dont be lazy.

hey i checked the codes and realized that its not the check engien light its a check gauges light? any ideas??

If it's the "Check Gages" light then it makes sense. Whenever the gauges show something out-of-range that light will come on to alert you. Here's what you should do: check the sensor in the passenger side cylinder head. It's the one that gives the temp reading for the gauge. You should be able to find a reference table either in a manual or somewhere on the Internet that should tell you the resistance of the sensor at particular temperatures. Check the sensor with an ohm meter and see if the sensor reads within spec. Also check the wire going to the sensor by grounding it to the battery with the key on, engine off. The gauge should go all the way to the top with no resistance in the circuit. If the gauge pegs on that test then the gauge and the wiring are both good.

After those tests post back with the results.
