"Check Gages" light is always on, shows low oil pressure

I have a quick question. My check gauges light is always on and my oil pressure is always at 0. Do you guys think that maybe this is a problem with the gauge or with my engine not getting enough pressure? Usually on a warm day it'll go to 40 for a few seconds on startup and dive down to 0. I started it in -8 degrees and it held 40 for a minute or two but then went down when it got warm. I've done a good 10,000 miles on my truck since I've had it and I believe if my oil pressure was at 0 all the time my motor would have seized by now.

I do have an oil leak, which I believe is coming out of the oil filter lines. Not totally sure. Oil usually sprays out of it if you fill the engine to the full mark, but if you keep it in the middle it doesn't really leak as much.

Oil pressure isn't something to guess at. Hook up a manual oil pressure gauge and see what the reading actually is.

And get that leak fixed so you can run the proper amount of oil in the motor. :icon_wink:

On my 89 the oil pressure gauge was acting weird so I got a mecanical oil pressure gauge kit from harbor freight and hooked up and my pressure was normal. I then got a replacement gauge from the local U-Pull it and installed it and all is normal. If you unplug the connector at the sending unit I believe the gauge should peg. If it is grounded it should read 0.
