Fast Idle Won't Engage

I have an 85 S10 Blazer with a Rochester E2SE. The fast idle will not work for a cold start. I found that when I manually seat the fast idle screw on the highest step of the cam it will start fine and fast idle fine. However, the fast idle screw will not seat itself on the highest step of the camautomatically.

I have checked the cam to see if there are any restrictions on its movement but it moves freely.

Once I manually seat the fast idle screw on the high step of the cam it will stay there fine.

After ithas fast idledand the engine temp is upItap the gas pedal and it will drop down to a normal idle speed and will idle fine.

Any ideas on whythe fast idle screw will not seat on thehigh stepof thecam automatically? Is this a choke issue?

TIA

Possibly an adjustment problem on the choke... I had a 2.8L '85 S10 pickup that was miserable in the cold.

Hopefully THIS ARTICLE from Autozone.com will help you.

RE: Fast Idle Won't Engage

Those instructions are perfect. Thanks.I forgot to mentionone thing though before a cold start the choke valve is completely closed.

So what I have to dofor a successull cold start isto rotate the cam downward so the fast idle screw will seat in on the high step of the cam (as mentioned before) and slightly open the choke valve (usually with a short screw driver). If I do not open the choke valve slightly it will idle extremely rough and the choke valve will be wet with gas.

When I push on the intermediate choke lever the choke valve will close. If I continue to push in the same direction on the intermediate choke lever I will come upon slightresistance and then it will give way and the choke valve will open again (the choke valve willopen about just as much as when I prop it open with the screw driver). Is this supposed to happen? If I continue to push on the intermediate choke lever further is the choke valve supposed to open again? Am I supposed to get this resistance? Is this resistance possibly my problem, since the choke coil assembly is not strong enough to overcome this resistance? What do you think.

It sounds like something is binding. There shouldn't be resistance in the operation of these components and that very well could be your problem.
