How to put spare on roof rack?
I have a roof rack on my blazer, and thought about putting a spare tire on it. But what's the best way to put it on? Just rope it down or are there special brackets for doing that? Thanks.

Have you considered mounting a basket up there? That's probably the safest.

is that the route most people go?

I guess if you want it to be a permanent change, it might be a good way to go, but if you just want to put it up there while you go off-roading then tying it down would be simpler.

ive got mine up with a custom bracket. I was gunna rope it down, but I figured it would wobble a bit...also I was concerned in the event of an accident, the wheel could easily be knocked loose, hence my bracket + ropes

What did you pay for that roof rack?

RE: How to put spare on roof rack?
Its a Surco one, payed like $200 for the rack, then it needs mounting blocks that clamp onto the blazer's factory rails, for another $80...bout $300 shipped. All the aluminum stock from lowes to make the bracket for the tire was another $50.

ya i would say if they dont make a rack that slides in the rails of the stock blazer then u could make one just some tubes or bars that mount to the rails for the blazer then have a center piece that has the 5 studs and get some lugs and tighten her down. but thats just my oppinion depends if u can weld or not to make the price cuz all u would have to do is buy the metal just thought i'd throw my idea out there cuz thats what i would do if/when i was gunna mount my spare on the roof

RE: How to put spare on roof rack?
Yea..custom would be much nicer..I just dont have the tools to do it:(
Also FYI, the tire/rack is right in the air flow off the windshield, so everything gets covered in bugs if youre near em, and the rack will whine at highway speeds. Not enough to hear over a radio, but its noticeable inside. Next time Im in lowes Im gunna see about some acrylic to make some wind faring for the front of the tire...hopefully that'll cut down on wind noise. |
