Problems with 4 Wheel Drive

I tried searching through the forum to find a similar post but couldn't do so.....so forgive me if this has lready been asked.

I don't seem to have any trouble putting the truck into 4 wheel drive; I pull the handle back the indicator on the floor console lights up and all is well. When I go to take it back out however, is when I have problems. I put the handle back into 2 Wheel drive....and back the truck up (I'm not sure that's necessary - but I know my brother had to on his Tracker and I did on my dad's old 1500) but the indicator light doesn't go out on the console. It doesn't seem to be in 4 wheel drive but I'm not 100% sure. So how do I 1)make sure that the truck really really is back in 2 Wheel Drive....and 2) make sure that the indicator on teh console goes out.

I don't have a manual as of yet (although I've ordered one) so I don't know the standard procedure for putting the truck in and out of 4 wheel drive. Anything I'm doing wrong?

RE: Problems with 4 Wheel Drive

With the linkage, the transfer case is back in 2hi, but the front axle probably is still engaged. Most likely cause is either a sticky actuator cable or a broken return spring. I think the actuator itself will be up on the passenger side inner fender. Try pushing the cable back in manually to see if it will disengage the front axle. If the cable is just sticking, you can use some WD40 to try to clean and lubricate the cable.
