First off, all 4.3L V6 engines in our trucks are Vortex engines.

In order to ehlp you, you need to go get the code read at your local autoparts store. It can be read even if the light has gone back off.

They did put out a few non-Vortec engines in these trucks but if you have a Code W engine you certainly do have a Vortec. A Code Z engine has TBI instead of CPI fuel injection. If your vehicle serial number has a W in it it's a Vortec. If it has a Z then it's a TBI. You can read your own codes without a code reader on an OBD 1 system (which you have). All you have to do is locate the Data Link Connector (ALDL), key off and jumper Pin A to Pin B (the two upper right ones), turn on your key (no engine start) and you'll see the codes flash 3 times each. The first flash is the tens and the second is the digits. The first one you should see is 12 (3 times) one flash of one and then two flashes. Then it will start flashing codes at you and repeat them until 12 flashes again. Write them down. If you miss one, it's OK because they'll just keep repeating them. When you get the codes, post again. Just turn off the key before you pull tje jumper. They make special jumpers for this or a paper clip works OK too. The nice thingabout the commercial ones is thay will also read your ABS brake codes too.

Tim (hanr3) is correct in his statement. All of the 4.3L engines put into these trucks have had the 'vortec' head design. It wasn't until the CPI engine was released that it became a marketing term.

There is some conflicting information in the original post. As gimpy said, if you have the W motor, then it is the CPI engine. Regardless, high engine RPM after an initial start could be a vacuum leak, a problem with the IAC (idle air control) valve, etc.

What maintenance have you don't to try to correct the problem?

Jump the plug to get your CODES

Look between your knees for the little plug in... Then follow the instructions above. We need the codes to help you.
