Sliding on ice, 4x4 goes CLUNK!

So it rained today, then froze into ice. I was backing out of my buddies driveway and got stuck on a hill, so I locked it in 4x and started going and all of sudden CLUNK, the 4x disengages(sp?) so, I put it back in 2w and then back to 4x, it worked fine then, but is this somthing that needs to be looked at? Anyone know what happened?

I always hear a clunk sound on my 89 when Im going around turns and 4x4. When I first had it repaired for inspection, I thought something was broken since they did among other things (Control arm, pitman, idler arms, halfshafts and wheelbearings). Turned out it was the passengers side aftermarket running boards that rub on the rocker panels when the weight shifts. No desire to put any more work into my blazer since I bought it for a daily beater in the first place.

I have a similar situation. When trying to engage the push button 4wd hi on my 95 blazer, sometimes it doesnt engage until im a half a mile down the road and the same thing when I try to get out of 4wd and back into 2wd it doesnt react right away. This is the thing that scars me. When it finally does engage or disingage, It sounds and feels like the front driveshaft snaps to a stop or kicks in really hard. Shaking the whole front end of the truck and scaring the crap out of me! What could it be?

States, Skillet:

Your problems could be a vacuum switch not functioning until a specific amount of vacuum is reached or rotational speeds spin the parts into place. Next time try engaging the 4x4 at a stop and rev the engine and see if it helps if so then you will have to hunt down the offending part, leaking vacuum ball under battery tray or line to the ball or the switch on the transfer case. If that does not work then there may be parts internal in the front diff that are messed up.

If your drive train is bound up, it will clunk anytime you take it out of or put it into 4x4. That is normal. The cure, take yourfoot of the gas, drive striaght, and on loose terrain when youpush the button.

If it still does it under those conditions, check yourt-case fluid level.Park on level graound and take the top plug out, a dribble of fluid should come out, if not, add till it does.
