started from square one

So the last couple days
i've been beating my head into the ground with my blazer. Right now I'm on the timing issue. I've read the other post on here and millions of others out there on the net. I have to be missing something, somewhere. I lined up the 2nd mark going clockwise to the "0" mark down at the pulleys. Pulled the dist. cap and it was at the number 4...so i rotated the motor till it got to the number one and it was exactly on mark(as ive read that it should be) Problem is, still no start. Engine cranks over but wont start. I'm thinking I need to pull the dist. again, move it to the number 4 direction, rotate it to number one and try firing it again?? If this doesn't work...what should be my next step? I"M A LEARNING SHADETREE MECHANIC!!!!

Ok, well I think I may have done it. Time will tell though. I finished my Blazer and she started right up. I'm just hoping that tomarrow when i test drive it it doesn't screw up again. Who can point me in the right direction as to what possibilities there are causing my timing to become an issue in the first place??
