tranny type

I bought an 89 blazer 4x4 4.3L v6 2 weeks ago since day one the tranny has been slipping, so from what i learned with everyones help. just replace it i'm guessing it's a 700/r4 but would like someone with more knowledge to confirm that before i go buy the wrong tranny. thanks

Its is indeed a 700r4.

Before you go looking for one in a junkyard remember this secret to compare if its a 700 or a 4l60e. If you look on the drivers side of the tranny, you'll see a big plug in. If its square its 700r4,if its round its a 4l60. If you are looking for one in a pull it yourself yard, only get one from a vehicles thats been wrecked,or you know for sure the engine is siezed. that doesnt mean you are getting a good one but the odds are more in your favor.

:icon_ditto: 700r4. Make sure to get another 4x4 trans. Dont try to convert. Not worth it. 4.3 shares the bellhousing with sbc's as well. Relatively easy to find.

ah yes^

you CAN convert it but you MUST swap out the main shafts that run all the way through the tranny. its not as simple as swapping the tail. Man i wish it was. If you can swap these, you might as well rebuild the trans yourself as everything has to come out.

Yup, make sure its from a 4x4. You can pull it from fullsize trucks as well...

will a 700 out of a 85 blazer 4x4 2.8 work on my 4.3 4x4

AndrewO1991 Oct 30, 2012 07:10 AM

Nope. Different bellhouseing

Personally i would look for one out of a fullsize v8 over a v6 one. They are built a bit better. While you working on it put a trans cooler on it also.
