Transfer case input shaft bearing retainer
Back to working on the Blazer (1994 s10 blazer vin W, NP 231 transfer case). I was replacing the input/output shaft seals and must have scratched the bore for the input shaft because the new seal will absolutely not go in. I already bunged one new seal up when I got frustrated and used more forceful persuasion techniques. I greased it up good too before I tried putting it on. Is it worth my time or even a good idea to pull the input shaft bearing retainer off and try to file out some of the burrs? Tried looking for a new retainer but I can't find any anywhere. Thanks for any input

Burrs? That's a bit more than "scratch".
I see you remove the transfer case altogether. In order to do a proper fix and not leave filings inside, at this point IMHO you have to remove the bearing retainer, bearing and shaft as a minimum to be able to properly plug the gearbox to work on the sealing surface. A picture would help assess the case. |
I took it to a shop, I was getting to paranoid. They had no problem popping a new one in there and charged me less than the price of a seal at my local cheap-parts-for-expensive-prices store. Thanks for the input as usual Error
