New cap, rotor, and spark plugs as mentioned before. Check the resistance of the plug wires and inspect for cracks or melted spots. Look for arcing between the wires, you can mist a little water over the running engine to look for this.

The EGR valve could be leaking vacuum, causing a rough idle. Take it off, clean it with throttle body cleaner and pipe cleaning brushes, and replace the gasket when you do. This is a very common problem, doing this made the idle on my 2.8 very smooth. Just dont get any throttle body cleaner on the diaphragm of the valve, wrap it in a paper towel or something to protect it.

Beyond this, you could have distributor problems, the timing could be off, your ignition coil may be producing too little voltage (test this along with your plug wires, easy to check). If its the original coil, you might as well replace it for the small cost and time it takes. After 20 years they dont produce as high of a voltage. The PCV valve could be clogged, just pull it out and see if it rattles when you shake it. If so, its fine. Look for vacuum leaks, just follow the vacuum lines from the throttle body and look for any damaged spots.

And of course, change the oil and filter.
