Where to put rear 6x9 speakers?
 

I see that there are a couple of plastic panels under the ashtrays on both sides of the bench seat in the back.

Is is possible to fit a 6x9 speaker or other size in there somewhere?

Better yet, does anyone have any photos of a project like that?

That is the location for the factory 6X9 speakers, however the mounting depth is rather shallow. What I did to overcome the shallow depth was to use my bandsaw and cut away the plastic panel from the ashtray mount. I then cut a piece of 1/2" plywood wood to the same size and painted it black. I cut out the plywood for the speaker and mounted the speaker with the plywood into the opening. There is enough clearance so that is does not interfere with folding down the bench seat. The ashtray remains intact. I picked up a donor cover plate from a junkyard to cut so I can always put the original back in if ever needed.

That sounds like a good idea. . . do you have and pictures of your work?

I have pioneer plates in the front and the pioneer 5 way in the rear. This gives a total of 14 speakers without having to cut up any panels and I added a clarion subwoofer (8" with amp) in the rear. The subwoofer is self contained and is held down with brackets that are velcro'ed to the floor. No drilling. The head unit is a pioneer with front/rear/sub pre-outs that fit the dash without a spacer. I have the pioneer IPOD adapter mounted under the lower dash panel and the connector for the ipod is in the glove box routed through the cover plate in the back of the glove box. (Again No Drilling required)
