Default 01 Blazer Speedometer pegged then let loose

Today I noticed the speedometer was pegged at 100 mph. I didnt notice it when I first used the truck till I got uptown. On my short trip to town and back it finally let loose and now when I do about 5 mph it says Im doing 10-20mph.
Im thinking it broke after being pegged.

I just recently put a new battery in it over the weekend.
Do you think that could have caused it to peg?

Also what else can I check before I make the decision that it is the cluster panel and nothing else? Been reading about using a scanner but there is no service engine soon light on. Yet!!
So dont think anything will show up as a problem if the service light didnt pop up.....

I was doing some research on this and read about stepper motors? Can my stepper motor just be replaced if I tear it apart and get the numbers off it?

On the Blazer forum home page google VSS. Don't know if you have a two or four. One is on the back of the tranny one on the back of transfer. Can't remember.
