Default 4WD Transfer Case Fluid Type

Just a note to clarify what type and where to find fluid for your auto or fulltime 4 wheel drive transfer case -- using the search terms I used (I finally found it in a post but could not find it again so here it is - maybe a bit easier to find for other, subsequent searchers).

It is GM Autotrak II - and is available at your local GM/Chevy dealer for about $7.50 a quart including tax at my local dealership parts department. Don't try Autozone - they don't stock it - and were trying to sell me some Mobil 1 sythetic gear lube. They finally called their lube hotline and confirmed the GM Autotrak II was it and that they did not stock it. Not sure about other retailers but since it is a GM product it isn't likely you will find it anywhere but a GM dealership.

The dealership will always have it in stock (cuz well they are a dealer and all) but you can usually find it at NAPA, Carquest, and sometimes Federated Auto Parts (some of you northlanders know what store I'm talking about).

If you have this button ( round AutoTrac ) then you would use AutoTrac fluid which is blue in colour , if you don't have AutoTrac you can use plain old tranny fluid but you can use the AutoTrac fluid in an "non AutoTrac' but not the other way around ...
