How many miles on it?

If its burnt, changing the fluid wont bring it back to life!!!!!! Only a rebuild will do that.
There is a chemical you can add to reduce the chance of ruiining the tranny. Ask your local autoparts store for something to reduce "Tranny Shock". When you add new fluid to an old tranny the seals may go into shock. They cannot handle the new fluid and start to fail. The old fluid left residue on the seals which helped them to survive.

so it would be a bad idea to change the fluid huh...u think that lucas stuff might help? the truck has 132k on it and its a 2wd...sometimes it shifts great then other times it acts like a manual transmission like yoru not letting off the clutch all the way..also when it goes into overdrive it doesnt stay very long and shifts back up to 3rd or 4th whatever gear is before overdrive..how much u think a tranny rebuild might cost..i kno for my other cars it was around 1500
