Default 95 V6 - fuel pump relay damaged?

I went up to Auto parts store, and bought a new fuel pump relay. When i went to replace it, the relay I pulled out of the dash had 5 pins, the replacement that I had just bought only had 4. the OEM relay had a row of three and a row of two pins. the new part had two rows of two pins.

Also, In the dash relay panel in the glove box, there are three relays, which one is the fuel pump relay? Chilton's manual doesn't say.

I'll keep searching, but I have to get this fixed to get to work tomorrow!!

Thanks!!
Andy

Default RE: 95 V6 - fuel pump relay damaged?

I guess one way to answer this easily, and to determine if the relay is the problem or not, would be an explanation of how to read a relay diagram.

The diagram on the relay show if from the OEM relay that I think I need to replace.
the new relay that I bought is missing the #4 pin. The Diagram shows the switch connecting 3 and 4, does that mean when it's energized, and closed, it connects 3 and 4, or does that mean when it's all off, it connects 3 and 4??

need some help!!

thanks,
Andy

Default RE: 95 V6 - fuel pump relay damaged?

Your relay should be a regular five pin relay.

If the diagram shows 1-5 for pin designations, then pins 1 & 2 would be going to the trigger source and be +12V and ground, pin 3 would go to the fuel pump, pin 4 (the normally closed side of the relay) would go to the fuel pump prime connector, and pin 5 (the normally open side of the relay) would go to the +12V power source from the ECM/BATT fuse.

I am more inclined to think that this is a regular 1" cube relay which will have pin designations of 85, 86, 87, 87A, and 30. Pins 85 & 86 correspond with pins 1 & 2 above. Pin 3 (in the case of the fuel pump relay) corresponds with pin 3 above. Pin 87 to pin 5. And pin 87A to pin 4.

This picture should give you an idea of which one is the fuel pump relay:
