Default 99 Blazer LS Excessive Noise while moving

A friend of mine has a 1999 Chevy Blazer LS that is experiencing a noise that is quite overwhelming. Since he isn't all that mechanically inclined, he came to me (the Jeep guy) and I figured that this would be a good place to ask if anyone had any ideas.

At about 30 mph or faster there is noise (that I first thought was road noise) that over powers the sound of the engine. Even if he lets it coast its an overwhelming hum coming from the front. The tires have less than 500 miles on them and have been balanced. It sounds the same in 2HI and 4HI.

Any suggestions or questions about the rig on where to look or considering would be greatly appreciated. Living on a small island in Alaska with no official mechanics makes it difficult to take it to a shop.

Does it change in intensity when turning left or right? All fluids up to snuff? What if he puts it in neutral and coasts while at speed?

Thanks for the reply. Tested it out today. The intensity does not change when turning. The fluids are good and it still does it in neutral.

Does the noise go away when you put it in 4wd? If so the vacuum switch on the transfer case may be bad and it is engaging the actuator cable.

Switching between 2HI and 4HI makes no difference.

I just had my blazer checked for a constant droning that I had assumed was tires. Turns out its pinion bearings in rear making the racket.
