Default AC Delco Fuel pump repair kit?

I just purchased a 1998 4wd for $500 today. After checking symptoms when i got the vehicle it would not start. I followed what some had said on the board of knocking on the bottom of the tank at the fuel picked and it started right up and seems to run great now. However I do not want to have the vehicle break on me later as im sure that it will. I found that the AC Delco complete assembly was quite expensive and wondered if it was ok to just replace the pump?

I found the pump and install kit at the following link. Is the entire unit fairly fragile is that the reasoning behind selling it as a complete unit? Also is there a write up that i couldnt seem to find on how to replace this pump without just replacing the entire drop in unit. Thanks for your help and here is the link

i don't know what year chevy did it but they made the sending unit and pump as one piece. you cannot seperate it.

That would make sense since even advance seems to only offer it as a complete assembly yet i still wonder why someone would even market this item as a repair kit if it cannot be seperated

The unit is plastic and can be brittle. A hair dryer will be your friend to warm up the small line on the bottom while trying to remove it (boy do the lines get stiff). Be very careful not to break anything while dropping the tank and removing the fuel tank lines or you'll be buying the whole unit anyhow. I never bought a kit but my buddy did, went through two in 3 months. The kit won't solve the (common) problem of a bad connection at the top of the fuel pump. As you say though it's a substantial price savings, take your time and notch the corrugated hose at the top with a razor blade to split and remove it - bottom one warm and soften with a hair dryer - don't use brute force.

That is about what I assumed that the unit becomes brittle. I will just purchase the entire delco unit.

Has anyone ever considered modding one of these to accept a more standard pump or to fix the issues that they have? I have done a twin walbro custom double pumper in the tank of a 2005 lancer evolution and the second pump was relayed off boost. I just wonder if most of the chevy plastic garbage could be cut away and the pump just be left in the bottom of the tank with the strainer and rubber lined out of the tank... perhaps I will look into this and possibly source a better fuel pump. Seems like this is a constant issue for you guys...

You are doing the correct thing replace the hole assembly and you wont have to worry about it. It is a horrible design and when the engineer designed this part his boss probably told him hey lets make the company some money and make this part a 1 piece item and lets rape them on the price. Having to replace a fuel pump because your fuel gauge is not working makes me sick now you have a good fuel pump with a bad sending unit. (Sorry that is my problem good fuel pump but when I get to a quarter tank it starts going nuts)

the unit does come apart despite what many think its 2 peices inside of each other theres clips on each side you push in to seperate the two the fuel level sending unit also comes right off after removing the two clips holding it in place the pump rebuild kit comes with new hoses n socks so no need to be gentle the stock pump must be pushed up through the plastic which retains it everyone thinks these pumps/sending units are such crap but very few people take the time to look into thing as for the walbro set up its fairly common amongst the guys running power adders and installs the same way the acdelco replacement pump installs i personally have to pull the tank and do the pump again cause i was in a rush and used a pump i had out of a cavalier im now going the walbro route
