Broken Rod
Well Im new and made an account just to ask this because I want some more opinions. My 01 Jimmy had a rod break and I don't really know how. I was driving the car hard sure and I know anything can happen. But what would cause the 4.3l to die like that? From what I always hear they are bulletproof but it seems mine wasn't and I kinda want to figure out why I don't really know where to start so I guess ask away. Sorry if its off topic

What kind of maintenance history did the engine have?
I repaired every little thing that went wrong and then some preventative maintenance

I dunno man. 80 mph is what, maybe 3k? Not very hard if you ask me.
Have you had the truck since new? Maybe the previous owner didn't keep up with oil changes, maybe they were a fan hitting the red line.
Or, maybe you just got a Friday truck lol.
The 4.3 is pretty damn stout. Partially cause it's a tried and true design (a 350 SBC missing two cylinders) and partially cause it doesn't make enough power to hurt itself!
So, you rebuilding the stock engine, or sliding a V8 in there?

Yeah thats what seems so odd about it breaking like this. Lol I could still drive it though it hit 45mph limping it to the shop.

Im just dropping another 4.3l in it I kinda like its power oddly enough. Its a surprisingly good racer.

Yeah, exactly how much revving were you doing? What RPM did you hit, and how long/often were you there?
And the 4.3 isn't really a racy engine. Not really built for high RPM...
You might need to look into a forged rotating assembly if you wanna keep racing it!

I would only ever really get up to 4k rpm. On take off I tend to let the other guy lead. It tends to be a lot of corners so I usually didn't stay high for too long. First gear would be the only thing I go through fast. Second, third, and fourth had decent acceleration at their torque curve peak.
