Default california emissions catalytic converter

So I lost power on the highway the other day w my 2001 2dr 4x4 blazer and limped her off and got towed to a friends shop. Turns out he says i need a new cat thee old one is clogged buts its a california emissions car ( how do I tell) and the part is a one peice item w a precat for like $600 plus labor. So my questions would be can I just use a universal cat in place or a straight pipe or will it set a bunch of codes and generally give me a hard time? I hate the thought of putting roughly a $1000 into this and something else expensive breaking and making it a very expensive 13 year old truck. thanks guys
