Default Battery Comparison Voltage

1995 GMC Jimmy SLT

Is it only me or has anyone have a opinion on comparison of Interstate Auto Batteries to other name brands.

It seams to me that the output voltage available from a standard Interstate brand 12 v battery is always lower than say Diehard or others ??

Not complaining about the output power , current available of Interstate, just the voltage level !

Comments. ?
Thank you

The charging system, (alternator & voltage regulator, serpentine belt & belt tension) is what determines/controls battery voltage. Depending on the year of the vehicle, the PCM can control the voltage regulator. At ~1500rpm, with the battery fully charged, all accessories off, ideally the voltage should be 14.2 volts, when measured at the battery. Engine off it should be ~12.6 volts. What are your readings?

Thanks Captain Hook.

12.6 v with engine off , key on sounds like what mine reads, exactly !

Charging voltage I ll have to get back w/ you.

Key off, engine off should be 12.6 volts, so if you have 12.6 with key on, engine off, that's even better. Post your 1500 rpm reading.

I still stick with AC Delco even for batteries. All my GM vehicles have always had better battery life with the Delco's. I'm not selling them but I will always go with a Delco part If there is a choice.

Default Battery Voltage

The real reason that I started this thread.
Starter is not turning every time I turn the key to start.
My Starter Solenoid voltage which I measured is 11.85 volts.
I have for a long time had a 1 - 1.2 volt drop in voltage in all electrical of the vehicle which follows after ignition switch wiring.
Key Off : 12.6 volts
Key On position : 11.6 - 11.8 volts
( as measured @
CIG lighter with meter or my CIG Lighter plug in Voltage Indicator "Doochigee" .)

I have had some say this 1.0 - 1.2 volt drop is normal , other people do question it . . .
Anyway - it appears this is limiting the Voltage which the Solenoid of Starter sees, causing intermittent Starter Turn Over.

Comments. ?
Thanks for any help

In a perfect world, zero voltage drop is desired. In reality though, .6 voltage drop at the starter is the maximum allowable. Any more than that and you will have problems cranking. Following the steps in this link will take you right to the problem: Voltage Drop Testing

Buy a new battery. That one clearly has a dead cell or two.
