Clanking into reverse, Vibrates when given throttle and let off. Help??
So I its been happening for about 3 or 4 months, i've just now taken the time to look at it. When shifting from park, neutral, or drive into reverse it makes a clanking noise. Sort of like taking two of the drive shafts and hitting them together. That type of noise. It also vibrates when on the express way and when I give it throttle or let off it has a real low tone vibration. I looked under the car and Im thinking its got something to do with the front drive shaft or prop shaft as its also called. Thats exactly where the clank noise is coming from. I can physically turn it with my hand about a 1/4 inch. Not to much play but im not sure if thats normal.. I dont think its the u joint because there doesnt seem to be any play there. its all in the shaft or trans. Not sure what this is.. Any help is appreciated. I have a video of it shifting where you can see it and hear it. I also have one of me turning it with my hand. If its really necessary I will post them on here when I get time. But for now all the help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,
I am combating this problem myself with my daughter's 96 I am getting road worthy.
I thought it was my U-joints as well, but with the help of my good ole Dad, we dropped the driveshaft and was amazed to see "NO" play in the U-joints at all. For what its wort, from my past experiances, everytime I have replaced U-joints, they are always reinstalled with what I call snap rings, I guess...not sure if thats the name...
However, on the U-joints I have and inspected, they appear factory fresh....they still have the plastic nipple on them...the type you usally heat up with a torch and have the "platic worm" come out from the heat....
Anywho..enough on that.........
I just recently serviced the rear end and found normal wear for a rig that has 213k miles on her....there was some metal bits in the bottom of the pumpkin, but no chunks or anything. The gear oil was nasty and burnt....I am suspecting it may have only been changed once. Who ever sealed her up did a nice job RTV wise.
I let the rearend drain for an hour or so, while I cleaned up the cover piece and removed the old gasket material from the rear diff. Filled her back up and the shifting fro P > D > R > D etc seemed to settle down a bit. I had a little "hum" from the back end and that has seemed to ease off as well.
Just my 2 pennies...

something else you can check, is your front driveshaft if you have a 4wd. if its stuck in 4wd and the front shaft is bad it will vibrate the heck out of the truck, seen it happen a few times. also check to see if the driveshaft is bent, jack the rear tires up and give it a little gas and watch for a wobble

Clanking while shifting and a vibration at freeway speeds are both classic symptoms of a worn out universal joint. It's best to check the joints for looseness while the shaft is still installed in the vehicle. Raise both rear wheels off the ground, trans in neutral, engine off: orient the universal joint "cross" horizontal, grab the shaft close to the joint, push up and pull down on the shaft, there should be no movement. Rotate the shaft 90 degrees so the other "cross" is horizontal and repeat. Do this for each joint.
The shaft must be removed to check for a binding joint.

Okay so here's where i'm at. I took out the front drive shaft so that I could shift it with out it being there to listen for the clank. So So I took it out and it still clanked into reverse. So obviously its not it. I sounds like its coming from the trans.. I did however check all the u joints and theyre good.
