Default Flashing dash lights and gauges quit working

I am new to this website, but saw helpful advice and thought I'd give it a try. My wife drives a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 blazer. She was driving it 2 weeks ago and all of the dash lights started flashing on and off and some of the gauges, like the fuel tank and speedometer, stopped working then recovered. It scared her pretty bad, thinking it was electrical. She stopped by a local nationwide store and they told her it was beyond their expertise and she needed to take it to a dealer. We've been out over $6000 in the past 3 years between our 2 blazers (mine's a '94). I can't afford a dealer's prices to look at this vehicle. Can anyone on here give me an idea what to check and how? My wife has resorted to carrying a hammer in the blazer in case it locks her and the kids in. Would really like to give her some peace of mind. Thanks!!!

Put down the hammer and back away from the vehicle!![8D] LOL! You can always manually unlock the doors.

Anyway, this sounds like the beginning of a faulty ignition switch. This is a relatively easy repair for the do-it-yourself'er and the part isn't all that expensive either.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out it was a loose cable to the battery. Lights haven't blinked since. And it didn't cost a penny.
