FRONT AXLE REMOVAL
 

Hey guys, I'm in the process of replacing my oil pan gasket and I've been reading that I have to take my front axle off to get the pan off.I have no idea where to even begin. If anyone could give me a step by step process to get the ball rolling it would be greatly appreciated. I figure I have to take the differential out, am I gonna need any new gaskets or anything? Thanks in advance.Vern

You basically have to remove the front CV axles, the front drive shaft, the front axle actuator cable, vent line, then unbolt the axle and drop it down.

For $15, a haynes manual will detail this half way decent.

I just went through that, and there are some tough steps you should be prepared for. I took three shots at it before I got the drivers side axle out. I had to build my tool set and my confidence that I could finish the job.

The hardest part was taking the steering knuckle out; you have to remove the ball joints to do that, so you might as well replace them while you're in there, unless they've been replaced lately. Mine were well stuck, and on a 4wd its tough to get them out, as the drive shaft is right in the way.

Also difficult was getting the hub bearing broke loose. On my Blazer at least, it seems the factory used an adhesive for pre-assembly, and that was hell to break loose. On the other hand, it all goes back together pretty easy.

I had a Hayes manual and BlazerForum.com for help, or I never would have attempted the job. Let me know if I can give you more info.
