Default EVAP System CEL

Speaking of EVAP problems, I have a 98 Blazer, I have a EVAP CEL problem, dealership told me that I need new sending unit, but I noticed that the silver tab, just under the fuel cap, does not close anymore. Could this be my problem, instead of the sending unit.

What is the code that is popping up? Do you know what tests the dealership performed to determine that the sending unit was at fault?

P0442 was the code I believe it to be, and they said they use some "detector" around the gas tank, and the sending unit is what they believed it to be. I have yet to go back to them, during the same trip the ripped my door handle out of my vehicle while taking itoff the lift. Anyways, I'm just trying to cover all my bases before I go and drop the gas tank. Also, wen I bought it, it had a locking gas cap, which I have read on other forums, might cause this codr, went out, bought a new one, reset the computer, and was fine for awhile, but then came back on.

I still find it difficult to believe that the sending unit is at fault, but if they used a smoke machine on it, they should have found the source... Check out the DIY section for the diagnostic chart for this code.
