This would be the charcoal canister.

as mgout said it's a box of charcoal. it is supposed to soak up fuel vapors i believe. (fuel evap system maybe?)

anyway, leave it alone. it's more afraid of you, than you are of it.

The charcoal canister stores fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, and then burns them during normal engine operation.

My blazer was recieving the code P0446 (EVAP canister vent blocked)
So I had this off to check it. But while taking it out of the bracket that it sits in, my bracket broke. So, yea, if you don't need to touch it, don't!!
The problem in mine ended up being the vent solenoid.
