Default key stuck in ignition

I have a 99 Chevy Blazer 4.3L V6. The key is stuck in the ignition and it won't shift.. My guess is that it's either the cylinder lock or the ignition switch that's gone bad. From the manuals i've looked at, apparently I don't have to remove the steering wheel to remove the lock cylinder, but they say that you have to turn the ignition to the run position and release the cylinder from a small hole on top. What i'd like to know is how I can release the lock if I can't turn the key. I now that sounds like a dumb question, but there must be something that I can do. Also I want to remove and replace the ignition switch, but the wire connector underneath seems very difficult to remove. I pressed on the two tabs that I thought were holding it in but i'm afraid i'll simply break it. There's very little information out there on removing the ignition switch. Is there part of the procedure that i'm unaware of?

You could also have a BTSI solenoid problem. I have a GM Service information DVD that says that there is a fuse for the solenoid, it sounds like it is part of the ignition switch??? or the same fuse. Check it, if that is good then you need to check the LT GRN/BLK wire and or the DK GRN/WHT wire for shorts...and if you do have to replace cylinder lock you have to do a relearn on the Passlock system for theft deterent systems....

if you pop that little rubber pad (under the ignition switch) off u can see inside of the column. Their will be a white plastic assembly with a small metal cylinder hanging down from it, push this cylinder up with a screwdriver (you will need a fairly long one 6in will be plenty). Hold it up and turn the key it should come right out.

The switch WILL NOT keep your key from turning. It needs a new lock cylinder. In order to not do any damage to the truck, your best bet is to call a locksmith, and bite the bullet. I have a friend that is a locksmith, and he states he does these all the time with no damage, where I have seen fellow techs tear the hell out of the columns, and they never work right again. Or you could do it yourself and try to drill it out. I have done thisa few times myself, but it takes a very long time!!! Because, you want to keep the damage to the cylinder not the housing.
