I did a little Googling and out the different between the old style spider and the new one. So I went ahead and ordered this guy:

First, triple check that you have the spark plug wires right (crossing #3 with #5 is pretty easy to do with these engines.
Next, double check that the cap is on correctly and that it's tight (but not too tight). Your Blazer has a plastic distributor body (unless it's been upgraded). These plastic dists are notorious for both breaking at the cap hold-down lugs and for wearing out prematurely. Breakage at the cap hold-down lugs can, of course, result in timing errors and backfiring ect. Otherwise, the dist isn't timed just right which, if true, will require an 'engine disturbed' distributor install (#1 cyl at TDC on the compression stroke). There's a sticky on this forum about this (and a bunch more across the Net). Meanwhile, please DO NOT attempt to start again it as it is now. Make triple sure that everything is right before you try to start it again.
