What's this little piece on the bottom of the FPR? Does it go anywhere?

Need help ASAP. New cap and rotor, set in time, backfires through intake and won't start. Got spark and fuel, all connectors seated properly.

First, triple check that you have the spark plug wires right (crossing #3 with #5 is pretty easy to do with these engines.
Next, double check that the cap is on correctly and that it's tight (but not too tight). Your Blazer has a plastic distributor body (unless it's been upgraded). These plastic dists are notorious for both breaking at the cap hold-down lugs and for wearing out prematurely. Breakage at the cap hold-down lugs can, of course, result in timing errors and backfiring ect. Otherwise, the dist isn't timed just right which, if true, will require an 'engine disturbed' distributor install (#1 cyl at TDC on the compression stroke). There's a sticky on this forum about this (and a bunch more across the Net). Meanwhile, please DO NOT attempt to start again it as it is now. Make triple sure that everything is right before you try to start it again.

After many hours of blood, sweat, tears and swearing, the Bravada is back together and running. No codes, no dummy lights, she's good to go.

Does the distributor have to come out to do this job?

Yes. I would say it isn't recommended to try alone.

The job as a whole isn't something I'd do alone. Especially when it comes to setting the timing.
