Motor mount recommendation - 98 Chevy Blazer
 
Hi all,

I have a 1998 Chevrolet Blazer ~170k miles. It is my daily driver. I just need this vehicle to last me about 3 more years. I have been getting some crazy highway vibrations and someone recommended changing to the motor mounts. Well, my car does have some play when shifting into drive or to reverse along with a clunk. I have been doing a lot of research on replacing my cars motor mounts and have come to a crossroad....

Many say replace with OEM.. well OEM is ~70-100$ a mount...
Aftermarket is ~10 a mount.

I'm looking to replace 2 engine and 1 transmission mount.

I can't justify spending 300$ on mounts when it's a guess at my vibration problem. I also hear horror stories of AM mounts causing horrible vibration after installing due to the hardness of them. I guess they are hard because people use them the cars to race and thus dont want the engine to move at all? Idk.

Can someone help me decide which brand and place to get some motor mounts that wont cause a hole in my pocket or be so hard as to cause the vibration of the engine to be transferred to the whole car?

At 170 K the factory rubber mounts are probably shot. Watch the engine while someone shifts from reverse to drive to see how much it moves. I'm hoping the clunk is U joints because they're cheap and easy to change.
Could you give us more detail on the highway vibrations? Around what speed does it start? Does it sound or feel like it's coming from a certain area? Does the vibration change when turning left or right?

It was me who suggested the motor mounts. It was only a suggestion as the vehicle isn't mine and I can't diagnose it myself so please look into it more before proceeding. I'd feel guilty if it didn't fix your issue.

There's some decent work involved with changing motor mounts, but if you don't want to spend $300, I think you answered your own question. Rock Auto has some for my '97 for $5.

I'll be honest, I am an OE fan on just about everything.. Unless I can find who made the OEM part and just buy that... (Delphi vs. AC Delco)

Don't feel bad!
I was just shopping around and seeing if anyone else has tried some commonly bought motor mounts for these vehicles.

I did look into how bad my mounts were and they didn't look/ sound awful. There is some play/jiggle when shifting into the torque gears ( Drive / Reverse), and a small clunk.

The work for the motor mounts does seem to be.... intense. I might have to do some more research but I'm leaning towards no with my current knowledge and tool set for the job. Last thing I want to do is jack up the engine and crush something in the process.
