New crate motor going in...oil recommendations?
Hey guys,
My 99 4.3L spun a bearing last week and the engine is toast. I've decided to drop in a crate 4.3 from GM. Long story short 1/2 my family works for GM and through channels got this at a good price.
Question...I have the option of starting with any oil I wish, so what would you guys use? I've got my own opinions but curious as if you had your choice right out of the box what would you run and what filter?
Thanks!

I always like mobile 1 or Valvaline products. As for filters I always use fram. Quick question though. That crate motor should have break in oil in it from GM should it not?

No break in oil from GM when shipped.
I too like Mobil 1 full synthetic but don't think that I should use for break in.
Anyone else on what conventional dino oil and filter to use?

I also installed a long block 4.3 from GM a few years ago. I now have over 70K on the motor and it is still running strong. I started with Mobile 1 and that is all i use. Make sure you follow the installation instructions that come with the motor. You have to pour Engine Oil Supplement over the rod bearings. The instructions also tell you to use cooling tabs in the radiator. Get the right tool for installing the oil pump pick up tube from Autozone tool free tool rental. (The tool allows you to tap the pick up tube into the pump without any chance of damageing the tube) Follow the break in instructions.
