this may seem like a stupid question but does the 4L60E automatic have any gear oil in it or is it just tranny fluid?

instead of posting a new thread il continue in this one. my transfer case is overfull! i just changed the transmission out and spilled a bunch of oil out of the transfer case and yet when i open the sight plug oil pours out. and it appears to be oil not atf. it feels to thin and doesnt smell like heavy gear oil but doesnt look atf. this is on a 98 blazer with a 3 push button 4wd. any ideas? could it be a seal between the tranny and transfercase?

yep,if it keeps overfilling after driving etc its the input seal in the transfer case
with it being push button i believe it takes Autotrak II fluid from the dealer, 2 quarts if I remember correctly. The fluid should be blue in color.

would a bad transfercase input seal cause the adapter to fill up with fluid? when i sepparate the tranny and transfercase fluid pours out

no thats normal. if that case is alluminum 3 button, should be just atf, if the case is magnesium and 4 button or awd, its blue auto trac ii fluid. if the blue stuff there will be a big blue sticker in the tail housing of the t case.

cool thanks. i replaced the seal without a problem, the t-case was so easy to pull this time now that i know what im doing. it appears to be good now, took it for a spin and pulled the fill plug after and the level hadnt risen. I think thats what killed the old transmission, the po wasnt checking the transmission level and let it get too low. makes me wonder if a fluid and filter change would have saved the old tranny
