Default Removing my starter?

Afternoon all. I am having a problem which I am hoping someone on here may be able to help me with. I have a 1998 Chevy Blazer mid-size 4x4. Yesterday the starter went on it and I purchased a new one. I have changed starters on other cars before but I am confused on this one. I got into it and removed the bolts and wiring but it is bigger than the gap available, is there something else I need to remove? Any help is much appreciated!

You have to remove the engine to get to the starter..just kidding. Here's some hints:

Default Rough job

I jumped into replacing my starter motor on my '96 4WD 4.3L engine- it was tough. I took out the 2 large bolts holding it in place, then had to remove the starter shield. It was held in by 2 10mm bolts. Even after that, it was tough. Make sure the battery is disconnected, then take off the two nuts holding the wires onto the starter motor. Some posts here have reported raising the engine or even cutting some metal from the frame that prevents the starter motor from dropping out. I just kept working it, taking the wires off, twisting and turning the starter until it came out. I then secured the wires to the starter, and worked it back it. It's a gruelling job, taking a long time but it can be done with a lot of patience.

Good luck, and take your time; it is do-able; I proved that myself!

Thanks all. What I ended up doing took me about 15 minutes. I took off the skid plate and raised the engine with a floor jack about 6 inchs and it just went straight in. Was simple enough in the end!
