"service engine soon"
Greetings. I went to the local chevy house with a service engine soon light and they told me I needed 2 catalytic converters as one was bad and 1 was totally missing or removed. They said the repair would cost 2700. I told them I would wait because thats close to what a 98 blazer is worth and they reminded me that it wont pass inspection the way it is now. Any suggestions or help?. Plus I didnt think the blazer had 2 converters, I thought it only had 1. Other than this, the blazer runs great and I hate to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for the replies!!

2700 bucks? WTF
you can get 2 aftermarkets off summitracing or even your local parts store for 100-250 each, then had a local exhaust shop weld em on for 100 bucks.

Go find a new Chevy dealer that has mechanics who didnt drop out of school in second grade....
Anyways, for one i had my cat redone for $300 so $2700 is beyond crazy. And two, i have never heard of any blazer having more than one catalytic converter.
The things that come out of "Professional" mechanics mouths amazes me.

Rockauto.com is a great resource. YOu register there.. check 'remember me' you only have to enter your vehicle once.. they have pictures af nearly every part.
A service writer interpreted what the apprentice tech told him. There ARE two cats on many V engines.
Only one on ours; and a direct replcement is available
About $160 plus shipping.

Test it yourself. Wait till its dark,go outside and drive it around hard for 15-20 min., pull it back in and get out of it and look at the cat. is it glowing red? if so its bad.
I remember the 2nd gen only having 1 cat.

Greetings. I took my blazer to my regular local mechanic. He ran the codes and actually interpreted them properly. It was the bank 1 oxygen sensor, not the catylitic converters. Why the dealer couldnt get this right is beyond me. Now the repair will cost 100 bucks or so instead of 2700 that the dealer wanted.
