Special dash tools for 98 blazer?
I need a heat core replaced and a local mechanic refused to do it(after getting into it) because he said he needs special tools to take the dash out. He apparently got this information from a dealership after he was having problems.
Now, I'd just like to know if this is legit? Not sure if I should just try another small shop or just pony up the dough for the dealer.

Just to remove the dash...I doubt it. Couple years ago I had my '96 Sonoma dash apart enough to tilt it forward and gain access to the HVAC system, and I don't recall needing any special tools for that. Or at least not anything that a mechanic would consider a special tool.

you dont need any special tools...i have done the job twice.
i think there is a how to around here. its not that bad...just some tight work space sometimes. if you handy you can do it yourself.
the only hang up is at the bottom of the hvac box there are three bolts. two i think have there heads between wheel well and fire wall...so need less to say, i customized the box to deal with this hurdle. never a problem again.

Like warthog,I have done the job twice. No "special" tools required, just a well stocked box of extensions and tiny metric sockets...and patience! The "mechanic" you chose is obviously just a parts changer, not a real wrench, especially if he had to call,of all places, a GM dealer! (Of course they are going to tell him that! FOOL!) Good luck!

Me thinks someone just didn't want the job. As said it's basic standard tools, the mindset of 'take the bolts out-put the bolts in', some patience, and coffee. I got lucky when I did the one in my truck as it belonged to someone else at the time and got paid to do it!
