Each button has a small LED in it to tell you what range you're in. Any of 'em lit? Does it flash while trying a different range? Check the 4WD fuse in the instrument panel fuses and the ATC fuse in the underhood fuse block.

IP fuses, open the drivers door, on the end of the dash. Underhood, on top of the drivers inner fender, black box with a "finger nut" in the middle of it holding the cover on.

Hmmm well since you have an 01 I'm guessing you have the same problems with 4x4 that just about every other 01 (including my own) had.
There are a lot of problems with the TCCM and the encoder motors in these years. My guess is it's either a bad TCCM or encoder motor. Mine was the same way when I bought it. The lights weren't lit up and they did nothing. I replaced the TCCM and they have light up now, but I still have a bad connector in my encoder motor I need to re-pin before it will work again. With that being said don't go throwing money into these parts without verifying they are bad. TCCM's don't come cheap and neither do encodeer motors (upwards of 1000$ each). Do some troubleshooting before you throw money into it.
If you want more info so a quick search on the forum for 01 4x4 problems. There are endless threads dealing with different issues. It will give you a good start to try and trouble shoot the problems.
