Is there any point in changing transfer case fluid?
I have a '96 that runs very well at the moment but the 4wd doesnt function. I don't need 4wd at all so I'm not really interested in reparing itright now, so, would it benefit me at all to change the transfer case fluid while I'm already under the vehicle to change the rear diff oil?

its kinda one of those situations where it wouldnt hurt anything. if you have 100k + on your truck it might be a good idea. its a pretty easy thing to do. or at the very least check it. if it goes low it might cause a problem

Definitely check it. If it is overfilled then you have a blown seal and it needs to be replaced. If it is overfilled then it will clog up the actuator for your 4 wheel drive and cause even more problems. If you undo the fill hole and you have fluid coming at you then you have a bad seal.

There are two plugs on the back side of the tcase. One for drain one for fill. Check the level via the fill plug.
One of these gents I'm sure will chime in with the proper level to look for but I have always just filled it so the fluid is level with the bottom of the check plug.

Hey! Since I have never changed mine and I am doing the usual pre-winter service on 10-14 (coolant, lube etc) what is the fluid needed?ATF or gear oil? Yes I have the manual but it is easier to hear from you than guess-since I am inside and the Jimmy is out!

Depends On what Tcase you have.... Most take ATF ... YA might wanna make sure what tcase ya have 1st....
As for level ID fill it till it starts pouring out.... Then just plug it up quick. Make sure the truck is level while doing this.
