Default Transfer Case Input Shaft Seal?

Is it "normal" to have to remove this seal in little pieces? What I thought was going to be a rubber & metal seal looks like a wet, crumbling ring of dried out roofing tar that had to be pried loose from the cavity walls in small chunks. I'm pretty sure its the original and I'm afraid it may have become this way from extreme heat - which replacing the seal isn't likely to fix...?

seals can rot over time. This could be what you are experiencing.

Thanks - I've just never seen one like this. I know it was bad because my tranny fluid kept ending up in my T-case and I could see cracks in it once I tore it down. Just concerned me. Hopefully I'll get it reassembled this weekend.
Was a little surprised that the Adapter Gasket was only available through a dealer too! (2002)

A donut without a hole is a danish.

A rubber seal without a metal frame is an o-ring.

Get the correct replacement. If it has a metal frame, so did the old one and you need to pull it out.

ha. if its the gasket that goes around the edge yeah it can look like that. and who knows who owned it last they may have used roofing tar. but the actual input seal should be a about 2inches high and made of rubber and metal

first you have to remove the transfercase then you have to pry it out of there.

i know on the fullsize trucks they have 4 bolts that hold the seal plate to the transfercase you can just unbolt that then get it out of there, makes it way easier

My transfercase input shaft seal is made of rubber and so is the replacement one from Advanced Auto Parts. There is a metal spring but that is it from my experience.
