Welding rear axles?

Default Welding rear axles?

What can I expect if I weld the rear axles on my 2door 4x4? I don't have a diff lock, and this truck is mostly a toy anyways. If I do drive it to work, it's mostly highway. Will I get a lot of wheel hop on such a short wheelbase? Or spend the money on a locking diff? 3.42 rear and 3.42 front. Don't really want to do the 3.73 swap front/rear due to fuel economy (although it's pretty crappy already).

I would never suggest welding a diff on anything that plans to see the street

A welded dif on a Blazer isn't ideal... It puts a lot of stress on an axle that isn't that strong to begin with. The rear tires will wear out nearly twice as fast as the front tires. Snow driving is really sketchy!

But if you are running primarily off-road, it makes a huge difference in traction.

i have the same issue as urs i have the g80 in mine and its worn out i need to replace the carrier in order to add a locker to it. wish they made a e locker for the gm 7.5 7.6 rear ends

mine is locked and i noticed a huge difference offroad, but yeah i wouldnt drive it on the road, it like skids around corners the few times ill drive it around the block.

What you're talking about is a "Lincoln Locker". Usually a Lincoln welder is used. It will eat tires like candy and ruin the car for wet streets. Add a posi unit to the rear end and leave the front open. I'm not a big fan of positrac to begin with. I have a Camaro I'm building with a posi unit and it's coming out as Camaros are bad about swapping ends anyway. Every notice how many have dents over the rear wheels?

Yup, a Lincoln Locker.
When I was a kid we welded up teh Spider gears on my friends '67 Comet Caliante.
It had a 289 and 4 speed, it did eat up tires as it hopped around turns.
We thought it was Cool but it wasn't practical.

in my youth I welded the spider gears on a '64 Comet. It was my buddies car. We drove it all the time on the street. Yes it always hopped around turns but basic straight driving it wasn't noticeable. If you have a toy there that might see the street sometimes, I might go for it.
