Default 1995 LS tranny won't disengage in reverse

Hello. My brother just bought a 1995 blazer ls with auto transmission. When he puts in reverse there is some type of problem with the transmission and/or torque converter where it doesn't seem to "disengage" (if this is the right term for it). That is, he applies the brakes and feels the driving wheels getting full power until eventually the motor stalls.

All forward gears work like they should.

Anyone have any experience with a problem like this or know of any linkages or other adjustments?

Thanks for reading!
